Silence



My father used to say,

"Superior people never make long visits,

have to be shown Longfellow's grave

nor the glass flowers at Harvard.

Self reliant like the cat --

that takes its prey to privacy,

the mouse's limp tail hanging like a shoelace from its mouth --

they sometimes enjoy solitude,

and can be robbed of speech

by speech which has delighted them.

The deepest feeling always shows itself in silence;

not in silence, but restraint."

Nor was he insincere in saying, "`Make my house your inn'."

Inns are not residences.

Her father warned her about people to look out for. People whom she shouldn't trust. These people think their better and don't feel the need to stay or be entertained. The mouse's tail indicated evidence of someone they've victimized or scorned. These people may like to be alone and she can take away their power by dazzling them. He tells her to pay attention to what people don't say, it has the most meaning. He wanted her to be one of these strong people. He said make my house your inn, meaning she should not make her visit long.
