Many of us were raised by parents who showed a healthy respect for crops, , grains, flowers, trees and every living thing on the planet. Would you say this is how everyone of us learned our covenant of taking care of one another?
Do you treat plants as nicely as you would treat other living beings? Why do you that? Is it upbringing?
Not quiet as much maybe but a lot more than probably most people.
I see plants as living, like animals, even though they don't move around nor do they make much noise but they are, none the less, alive.
I gew up in a caring environment where we were taught respect for all thigns and to manage all things with care as a responsibility of being a human on this planet.
It is unfortunate, would'nt you agree, that as a whole humanity does not follow this.
Reply:yup. Its a mattter of "monkey see " monkey do " if you illtreat something, yr kids will see and think that thats the way to go !!!
Reply:Plants give us oxygen to breathe. It's only fair to treat them nice in return. A life for a life.
Reply:Plants do have feelings. They also communicate with each other. They are no different than any other living things; animals.
Reply:You get what you put into it. You won't go to jail if you don't feed it water or fertilizer or such, you will notice the different of it appearance. You won't get the result it suppose to be such as colors or fruits from it.
When come to raising animals or kids, you will go to jail if you beat the living day light out of them or don't feed them proper nutrients. The fruits would be the reward of how they later will become the adult they are. If you want them to be responsible adult they will look at how they are being treated.
Reply:I was raised to always have good intentions. Unfortunately, good intentions and a green thumb don't always mix.... Most of the plants I end up with die because they don't get the care they need (I forget to water, they don't get enough sunlight, etc.) so I've switched to succulents. Now THOSE are hard to kill, and they're interesting to look at.
I don't think that in the US people learn to take care of one another, period. At least not these days. However, I think the way that I learned empathy and respect for other people was definitley not by having a love for plants.
Reply:wow i had to give a little laugh at this question.
plants? i'd have to say i treat plants like plants and humans like humans. last time i checked humans and plants are in two different ball parks. nowhere close. i dont think we water humans and expose them to the sun.....i mean last time i checked. until i get violently attacked by a plant...then that might change. but no....i have no feeling towards an inactive part of nature.
Reply:That's a Lovely question!
I personally feel it is because of the way we were raised. Most of the values we carry throughout our lives are ingrained in our childhood by our parents. Some we acquire or rearrange based on our experiences later in life.
We in India revere/respect plant life as much as any other living/imaginary thing. Some trees/plants are even worshipped.
I remember our elders telling us not to touch/disturb the plants at night as they'd be asleep. Cutting a fruit-bearing tree was considered bad omen. All this might sound like stupid superstitions but the core underlying was to treat them with respect as you would a real human being.

Reply:we have to treat other things nicely dont treat other things like dirt thats just rude anyways plants give us oxygen without plants we wont live
Reply:Actually, in my case, my parents really could care less. I was born with deep empathy for living creatures......so I do care about plants and animals as well as people. I try not to harm or kill anything!
I think David Carradine's Kung Fu show back in the 70-80's really impressed me. I like how his character was so gentle and the relationship with Master Poe and little grasshopper was patient and sweet!
take care
Reply:i wont treat them the same i mean if i had the chance to have my mom die or the plant on my dresser then i would chose the plant. But they do have a big impact on out lives
Reply:I love plants but can't treat them like humans.Plants have patience.
Reply:not everyone learns this respect. I learned to be compassionate as a child - dont deface tree trunks or break off brances - just enjoy thier shade. We were never allowed to kill bugs - even if they were in the house. I had a pet spider named buba when i was a kid - a daddy long legs livign in the corner of my bedroom till my mum put it back outside so it coulld be back in its home. We had a vegitable garden an i had to water it. i had a pet plant an talked to it cause my mum said that made it grow. it was a little lemon tree named anistasia and it even had a purple cardigan i gave it when winter came so it was warm lol. was however allowed to kill mosquiotes lol. My mum would say "dont say the word hate. hate is a strong word. Your only allowed to hate mosquitoes." haha
Reply:Yes I do. In fact I subscribe to that part of the philosphy proposed by the Scientologists which says that the most important -- the only purpose of all life is to survive.
According to their theory (or rather, postulate) , we, as humans, first appreciate survival on the "1st Dynamic" -- that is, the Self. Then we appreciate survival on the 2nd, as survival through a mate and procreation. Then we appreciate survival on the 3rd, as a group. The we appreciate the 4th, as the Human race in general. Then, in answer to your question -- we can appreciate our survival on the "5th Dynamic", that is, through animals and plants. After that comes the planet as a whole, and so on up the scale to the Universe (and perhaps beyond!).
I see no reason to alloy this explanation, which so well seems to delineate human behavior, by applying "psychology" or some other empirical reasoning to it.
Reply:I try to treat everyone nicely but always go out of my way to be nicer to animals and plants.
It has nothing to do with my upbringing but rather wanting to care for plants and animals after meeting so many people that don't and realizing that it's our fault as humans that they're dying or being destroyed.
