I just asked a Q about known puppymills?

And I got great answers, thanks everyone. Another part of my project I need to deal with specifically is What makes a Puppymill Website recognisable? What sets it apart from a genuine breeders website?

Some of the ones I can think of are:

- Real breeders show a full pedigree

- Real breeders don't put feather boas/hats/flowers and other gimmicks on their dogs in the pics to make them look "cute". A REAL dog doesn't need gimmicks

Any more for me?
I just asked a Q about known puppymills?
Contact the people and ask them questions... such as what diseases are their breed prone to. what championships have the breeding pair won? do they have BOTH parents on site (if they dont have the male, its usually a BYB)...if they cant or wont answer you, theyre are a BYB or puppy mill.

Good breeders will have all of this listed on their site, and have pictures of ALL the dogs.

If they are close to you, go out and see the dogs. Check out their conditions and living arrangements. If it is dirty and crowded.. its a puppy mill.

Good breeders have lots of space for their animals and have names for each, a good relationship with each dog, and have the area very clean.

If theyre in cages or cardboard boxes, you've got a puppy mill or BYB.

Ask them if they have prior customers you can contact. Most reputable breeders will have no problem letting you talk to a prior customer.
Reply:mulitple breeds being bred

no record of showing in conformation etc.

no health guarantee

VISA/MASTERCARD

all dogs should have OFA numbers etc. for generations
Reply:A real breeder might "show" their litter online, but they would NEVER sell a puppy online.

Real breeders don't breed LOTS of different breeds.

Real breeders will have if thier dogs have been tested on each dog's page.
Reply:Real breeders only breed one breed of dog. [i wish there were synonyms. gosh.]

Real breeders ensure you are the right owner, and understand your motives.

Good breeders question you a lot, and will notify you of all medical issues, age, and make you sign a contact.

Good breeders will not sell their dogs until they are 8-10 weeks old.

that's all i can think of for now
Reply:A true breeder backs up their dogs 100%. They dog health certifications, hips, elbows, heart, etc. on all of their breeding stock and registers with OFA.
Reply:Bad breeders also show pedigrees.

Mmm, some good breeders will show photos of their dogs in halloween costumes and such, but you are right, they dn't try to make their puppies into stuffed animals.

What makes a puppy mill recognizable? Their dogs have no letters before or after their names. THis is a dog from a responsible breeder: http://www.mpactmalinois.com/mpactdogs/c...

Champion Moonquest Christmas Magic, OA, AXJ, EAC, EGC, EJC

OFA BM-913E27F-T (Hips - Excellent); OFA BM-EL186-T (Elbows - Normal);

OFA BM-TH24/70F-PI (Thyroid - Normal) Cerf. Eyes Normal

And responsible breeders don't sell their dogs to just anyone. It's a lengthy process with applications, vet checks, referneces, etc.

Here's a checklist that may help you: http://www.pbrc.net.breeders3.html
Reply:Good breeders:

They only have 1 or 2 breeds.

They don't breed mutts or make mutts.

They offer a health gurantee.

They have spay/neuter contracts for their puppies.

They show ofa, cerf, pennhip, msu...ect results of genetic tests.

They show the pedigrees of dogs.

They show their dogs in conformation and other events such as agility, obedience, ect.

They offer to take a dog or pupy back at any time during its life! If you can't keep the dog they take it back!

Good breeders don't sell puppies until they are 10-12 weeks old.

They stand behind their dogs and if at any time you aren't satisfied they will do what they can to make it right!

They offer you advice if you need help with something, you can call them and they will help you if you have a problem.

You can't base your opinion of a breeder on a website! You have to get to know the person and see what they are about! Websites are misleading. I don't trust websites!!!
Reply:Several breeds

Lots of dogs

Many litters

Takes Credit cards (sometimes)

"Special" dogs.... ie. Teacups, Mini's, special colors, special size

mutts of any kind.

Not docking/cropping in traditionally cropped/docked breeds

Breeding only for color

Breeding for something out of standard (goes with "special")

Not showing/working. Dogs not titled, titled dogs in pedigree don't count unless grandparents are titled and then at least one parent has titles.

registration other than AKC.... Some breeds have their own registries (border collies have the ABCA) and are dual registered, but AKC needs to be on there as well.

Not members of the breed club, preferably the national as well as local.

Puppies let go before 10-12 weeks

no health testing

not allowed to visit the puppies...

Add: I saw another mention that if they don't have the stud on site it's likely a byb.... this isn't necissarily true. Actually good breeders often out cross to different lines and to dogs they don't own. I would be more wary if they were breeding their own dog. Especially all their females to the same stud. Better ask why they used a particular pair of dogs. They should give a list of answers, including the flaws and good points and why they work together.
Reply:"Real" reputable breeders would NEVER sell their dogs online! They require buyers to fill out applications and to meet the breeder IN PERSON!

They also would NEVER sell a puppy under 8 weeks of age!

Most reputable breeders also isolate their expertise in one breed of dogs. In other words, they'll ONLY breed say, German Shepherds, or ONLY labradors, get what I mean?

Also, a good breeder will not breed their females more than 3 -4 times, for the safety and well being of the dog!

(At my job, females are bred 3 times before being retired to a family who is thoroughly screened)
Reply:Once I was looking online for a puppy from a breeder of miniature poodles and came across a website. It was definitely a puppy mill website as they offered as many as 10 different breeds, all in the same place.
Reply:Real breeders don't sell sickly runts or designer mutts.

Real breeders let dogs do what they are bred for,(let border collies herd, golden retrievers retrieve)

real breeders include pics of every dog, and don't hide the evironment, which should be clean.

real breeders keep blogs to let every one know what is going on.
