What would plants (grass, flowers) look like if contaminated with mercury?

if, say, the liquid metal mercury is thrown on grass- and flower-type plants, what would they look like after it takes effect and how long would it take to show such effects?

I live in an area with extremely high levels of mercury in the soil (old mining area, anything living in the river is basically inedible if you value your brain cells) and the plants grow just fine with no visible effects. I'm pretty sure throwing mercury on a plant won't do any harm.
